Designed for automotive drivelines, construction machinery, and heavy equipment, the FTD420 is a precision forged shaft made from 42CrMo alloy steel (equivalent to AISI 4140, DIN 42CrMo4, SCM440). Configuration
Each FTD420 is customproduced to customer drawings. The standard supply includes:
– One piece forged shaft (solid, hollow, or with flanges/steps/splines/threads)
– Full material certificates and mechanical test reports
– NDT reports (UT + MT)
– Heat treatment records (quench/temper, optional induction hardening)
All products are processed from billet through forging, heat treatment, and machining to ensure dense microstructure and stable performance.
Material & Chemistry
Manufactured from electric arc + vacuum degassed 42CrMo, free from porosity and inclusions. Typical composition: C 0.38–0.43, Si 0.15–0.35, Mn 0.75–1.00, Cr 0.80–1.10, Mo 0.15–0.25, P/S ≤0.04. The steel offers high hardenability (up to Ø80 mm), no temper brittleness, and good low temperature impact toughness.
Mechanical Properties
After quenching and tempering (tempered sorbite structure):
– Tensile strength ≥1080 MPa
– Yield strength ≥930 MPa
– Hardness ≤217 HB (as supplied)

Forging & Grain Refinement
Multi direction upsetting and drawing at 1150–1200°C (finish >850°C), forging ratio ≥4:1. This eliminates cast defects, refines grain to ASTM 6–10, and creates continuous metal flow lines that boost fatigue life.
Dimensional Tolerances
Precision machining holds critical dimensions to IT7 grade, straightness ≤0.2 mm/m, journal run out ≤0.005 mm, spline indexing error ≤0.01 mm, and diameter tolerance –0/+3 mm (as forged). This ensures precise fit with bearings and gears, reducing assembly costs.
Heat Treatment
Standard cycle: normalising (870–880°C, air cool), then oil quenching from 830–850°C, tempering at 480°C. Optional induction hardening (890–900°C, air cool, 65°C/s) and low temperature tempering are available. All parameters are tightly controlled for consistent microstructure.
Surface & Delivery
Available in black as forged, ground, or turned condition. Additional surface treatments (phosphating, chrome plating, etc.) can be supplied on request.
Quality & NDT
Each shaft is 100% inspected by UT (GB/T 6402, defect ≤Φ2 mm, depth ≥200 mm) and MT (JB/T 6061, crack sensitivity ≥0.01 mm). Batch sampling includes tensile, impact, and hardness tests. Raw materials are spectrometrically verified, and each forging receives three chemical analyses and UT checks before release.
Integration & Customisation
The FTD420 fits directly to gearboxes, drive axles, reducers, motors, and cranes; ends can be splined, flanged, or threaded. We offer full customisation: diameters Ø80–1200 mm, weights up to 50 t, lengths up to 30 m, solid or hollow, with complex geometries. Turnkey service from billet to finished part is available.
